Program Title:

Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER)
Includes the description of the NSF component of the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE)

Synopsis of Program:

CAREER: The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program is a Foundation-wide activity that offers the National Science Foundation's most prestigious awards in support of early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education and to lead advances in the mission of their department or organization. Activities pursued by early-career faculty should build a firm foundation for a lifetime of leadership in integrating education and research. NSF encourages submission of CAREER proposals from early-career faculty at all CAREER-eligible organizations and especially encourages women, members of underrepresented minority groups, and persons with disabilities to apply.

Application Deadlines:

Thursday, January 30, 2023

Earlier submissions are highly appreciated

(Note: Additional documents required for the "Resubmission of CAREER Proposals")

** For PIs intending to work on a resubmission and who have not yet received a decision from NSF, please check the appropriate Tentative resubmission box and submit a partial application. If your 2021 (or earlier) proposal is declined and you want to activate your 2023 bootcamp application, please contact Linda Vigdor (lvigdor@gc.cuny.edu) ASAP after hearing from NSF. Please include your most recent CAREER proposal and reviews.

>> For those PIs working on a 3rd CAREER submission and who participated in a previous CAREER bootcamp, we might organize a more focused and shorter duration group for this cohort. Specifics to be decided, based on interest and other factors.

C. General Questions

D. Please prepare the following in outline format (you may copy the template and attach your completed outline as a separate document). For each topic, no more than ½ page is allowed; use 11 or 12 pt font (10 for Arial). Please note, we are not looking for a Project Summary so please do not submit one. Also, please keep your text within the length guidelines.

For First time CAREER Submissions-

  • Rationale: Provide a rationale of why you think this year is a good year for you to apply for an NSF CAREER award, given that NSF allows 3 opportunities to apply, all prior to receiving tenure.
  • Research Plan: If you have a draft project overview, please submit that (e.g., from the Grants 101 bootcamp). Otherwise, write no more than 1-2 pages, stating your expected research problem, hypothesis, or overarching question. Include a statement of how this research is distinguished from your PhD or postdoc advisor(s). PLEASE NOTE - DO NOT SUBMIT AN NSF PROJECT SUMMARY.
  • Intellectual Merit: The expected significance for your field.
  • Passion for the topic: Why you are passionate about this area of research or why you are drawn to it.
  • Preliminary Data: A description of your existing preliminary data relevant to the proposed project. If not yet available, provide a detailed plan of how you will get the needed data by (approximately) the end of March. If your field may not require preliminary data, please explain briefly why.
  • Publications: State (up to 4) of your most relevant publications related to the proposed project; identify your contribution to the article and your academic position at the time of writing it (e.g., PhD student, postdoc, assistant professor). Please do not submit a long reference list.
  • Biosketch: Attach a biosketch (2-5 pages maximum)
  • Department Chair Support: A brief letter of support signed by your department chair, using the following template text:
    • I acknowledge that ______(PI)__________ will be eligible to apply for NSF’s CAREER award for the 2020 cycle
    • Both ____(department chair)___ and ____(PI)_______ are aware that ASRC’s CAREER Bootcamp will require a significant time commitment by the PI, including weekly meetings and writing/reading assignments. The commitment, in attending bootcamp sessions and in regular writing assignments, can be expected to approximate a workload equivalent to a graduate seminar.
    • I (dept chair) agree that for the duration of the bootcamp (February – mid July), ____(PI’s)______ priority commitment will be to the bootcamp, for regularly scheduled weekly meetings. Thus, the PI would be excused from such activities as department meetings.
    • (note: It is the PI’s responsibility to inform her/his department of the Bootcamp meeting schedule.)
    • ____PI____ will be responsible for attending Bootcamp meetings and managing his/her proposal writing time.
